AMAZING MUSICAL ASHANTI TRIBE

A History

The Ashanti Tribe was once a great empire located in what is now Ghana. Rising to power in the time of the European search for gold, the Ashanti were trading partners with the Portuguese.
A series of small chiefdoms unified by the Paramount Chief or Asantehene around 1701, their primary export was gold to the nations of Europe, and the currency of the Empire was gold dust.  The kingdom's economy shifted in the 1800's to produce a hefty number of slaves instead of gold.
The Ashanti Empire survived until the late 1800's, where it was eventually conquered by the British in 1902 and annexed into its Gold Coast Colony.
